We study the works of the Buddha Shakyamuni and the great teacher Nichiren Shonin. You can learn more about the Basics of Buddhism, The Life and Times of Nichiren Shonin, The History of Nichiren Shu Buddhism by visiting Dharma Talks.
We practice Nichiren Buddhism which is based on the teachings of the original Buddha, Shakyamuni and which incorporates the mantra Namu-Myoho-Renge-Kyo which was first expounded by Nichiren, a 12th Century monk in Japan, who is the founder of this sect.
Namu-Myoho-Renge-Kyo is called the Odaimoku and is the primary part of Nichiren Shu practice. Namu-Myoho-Renge-Kyo is the title of the Buddha’s greatest teaching, The Lotus Sutra. These five syllables are the essential teaching of the Shakamuni Buddha and lead to his own enlightenment. When individuals recite the Odaimoku and follow the path of the Buddha they, too, will become enlightened and be able to help eliminate the suffering that we all see (and sometimes cause) that is around us.
Nichiren Buddhism is a path to enlightenment...a path to an awareness and acceptance of all the best qualities of this world and of ourselves as human beings.
A human being is part of a whole Called by us, 'Universe', a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings As sometimes separated from the rest- A kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us Restricting us to our personal desires And to affection for a few persons nearest us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison. Albert Einstein.
